I applaud Virginia Tech's campus paper, The Collegiate for their minute by minute online reporting today. They did right by their fellow students and in the shadow of tragedy I say what they did is commendable, they were diligent in their work.
This is why it is important for college campuses to have newspapers. I've been sick all day as I continue to read articles from various news sources. Sitting at my iMac all day I read from Virginia papers, the Times, the Post, CNN, the Roanoke Times and the Collegiate. Each hour it seemed like a new, higher, more appalling number was released in regards to how many people were dead and how many were in surgeries or seeking treatment at local hospitals. In the age of blogs and online journalism the response was immediate and I feel like it was the first time in my life that I saw just how different it is to have something as historical and tragic as the shootings today be told to you via the Internet. The numbers keep changing, the updates are minute to minute and the photos come pouring in from sources ranging from AP Photographers to students' cell phones.
All I can say is that from a journalist's point of view, it was encouraging to see how up to date the information was that these students at the Collegiate Times had on their web site for their fellow students. I still am processing the magnitude of what happened today and pray for the families of those who were killed.
When will we stop killing each other?
