Perco-Loopy

Nurse Mom and the reluctant patient

They totally screwed me Friday! It's true. I arrived at the hospital at 10 a.m. sharp, my beautiful mother in tow, and prepared for my first surgery. After sitting around for a good hour I finally was called back to pre-op where I had to strip down and wear a fancy hospital gown and a paper-like "robe." I even got to sport the fancy brown non-slip socks and a blue hairnet. After another 2 hours in the pre-op room my dear friend John (I could be making that name up) came down with a gurney and wheeled me up into the wing of the hospital where my surgery was to take place. There I sat in the FREEEEEZING cold room for another 2 hours before the IV drip got droppin' and the scalpal got a'cuttin.

This is the latest wrist accessory. What do you think? Pretty, right?!

At some point prior to giving into the sleepiness of the drugs the resident orthopedic made a joke with my nurse about how I needed to be strapped onto the OR table so I didn't fall (I explained to them that I had fallen off my bike a few months prior to this accident, you know the time I knocked my front tooth out). At some point before I woke up in the recovery room entirely confused my surgery happened. They cut open my wrist, embedded a screw into the 2 pieces of my right scaphoid bone and closed me back up just like that.
For the rest of the weekend I laid in bed at the University City Sheraton with my Mom. She came down from Michigan to be with me for the procedure and to be my personal nurse for the weekend. It was actually a lot of fun, as silly as that sounds. I spent the weekend hopped up on Percocet, Motrin and Benedryl and got to hang out with my Mom too! Twas a blast. Being one of 7 kids makes times like this weekend extra awesome---I rarely get to spend time with my parents one on one and this weekend I had her all to myself for 3 days. We shared pints of ice cream and she laughed at my hazy headed antics. You see for some reason this time around Percocet was making me itch. I've used it in the past after my other injuries without any reaction but this time I was an itchy scratchy mess. After hearing from the doc that this was a common side effect easily taken care of with Benedryl I hopped on the drowsy bandwagon and added that lil pink pill to my cocktail.

My follow up is next Tuesday (Sept. 4) so wish me luck.

I'm so glad that your mom was able to be there! And she does look a lot like you.... good to see where your good looks came from!

Anyway, we should get together soon. How's the Nuthouse treating you?
